Infrared Asphalt Repairs – Edmonton & Area

For asphalt repairs that do not require work to the base, GrassChopper Landscaping uses a revolutionary process called infrared asphalt repair.

Conventional asphalt repairs provided by the overwhelming majority of Edmonton asphalt companies take longer to complete, and the repairs are likely to last a shorter duration. Infrared asphalt repair involves the use of applying heated panels directly onto the asphalt, softening the existing material so it can be reworked while still in place. This eliminates the need to saw cut out and remove the old asphalt, dispose of it, haul in and install new asphalt, and seal the joints. Infrared asphalt repair is the superior technique not only because the process is faster, but also leads to longer lasting results. Aside from slow completion speed, a significant disadvantage with conventional asphalt repair is the formation of ‘cold joints’ between the repaired area and new asphalt. When an area is removed and new hot asphalt is installed within it, there will be temperature differences between the existing asphalt and the new hot asphalt installed, this is called a ‘cold joint.’ This joint will be a point of weakness since the materials have not bound together properly. This will be a point of weakness and over time water will penetrate through the joint and will lead to an asphalt failure.

Infrared asphalt repair completely eliminates this problem by heating up the failed asphalt through infrared rays (no flames) but also heating up the area surrounding the area to be repaired. The areas are being worked together at the same temperature without a distinct temperature differentiation line, completely eliminating cold joints and resulting in no areas of weakness. The asphalt repair area is completely bonded to the existing areas surrounding it, ultimately resulting in a significantly longer lasting repair. Amazing!

Frequently Asked Asphalt Repair Questions

Is the use of Infrared asphalt repair safe?

Yes, infrared asphalt repair can be considered even safer than conventional methods. The panels themselves use infrared rays, so there are no sparks or flames. The panels are placed directly onto the asphalt for 10-15 seconds, then turn off once lifted to ensure worker and pedestrian safety. This results in the asphalt to be softened to the same condition as brand new asphalt and can be reworked by hand and equipment. The infrared method eliminates potential hazards from cutting out the asphalt and the associated noise from this, reduces heavy trucking in and out of the site, and reduces equipment excavating the old asphalt and hauling in new

Will the infrared asphalt repair be the same quality as conventional methods?

No, it is far superior to conventional methods!
As noted in our above description the infrared method eliminates cold joints which are the primary points of weakness in a repair. The asphalt quality itself is also equal to new asphalt. Asphalt is a completely recyclable material, so new asphalt is often mostly recycled old asphalt with simply heat and oil added to it. The Infrared method essentially is the same process as at an asphalt recycling facility. Depending on the condition of the area to be repaired, new asphalt and/or oil will need to be added to it, but often heating up the asphalt is the only requirement and will result in equal quality to brand new asphalt.

In what temperatures can the infrared method be used?

Unlike conventional asphalt repair methods, infrared asphalt repair can be completed at any temperature, and done year-round. Colder temperatures will result in a longer time taken to penetrate the asphalt and allow less time for the repair itself to take place, but additional steps can be taken to allow for this on any and all sites. The colder temperatures will not compromise the depth of repairs or the ability to create thermally bonded ‘joints.’

Can infrared asphalt repairs penetrate through multiple lifts of asphalt?

Yes, but this must be completed in steps. The infrared rays would penetrate through just one lift at a time, so the top lift would need to be heated and removed, then the next lift could be heated again. Though multiple lifts may have been installed during construction, it is not always necessary to remove in individual lifts. Typically with potholes, the multiple layers will have been exposed and the infrared repair will work with just one application.

GrassChopper Landscaping can help with all of your asphalt repair needs using the infrared method. This includes repairs to potholes, cracks, catch basins/manhole covers and any and all general asphalt failures. Our management team ensures a seamless repair on time and on budget with professionally trained project managers with excellent communication skills.
