Edmonton Weed Control Services

We have several weed control programs that involve regular or periodic weed spraying. The ideal approach to weed control, using Integrated Pest Management, is to prevent a weed problem from developing in the first place.

This can be achieved through regular grass fertilization programs and adequate watering, however sometimes weed spraying is still required. The weed spraying programs we offer vary, depending on several factors such as the type and degree of weed infestation, time of year, and other environmental considerations. There are certain times of year where weed spraying will work better than other times of year, and this relates to the life cycle of the weed. Likewise, certain environmental conditions will be more favorable to spray in than others, and our experienced and highly trained pesticide applicators can advise on the best approach and best timing. Typically we recommend 3 rounds of weed spraying per season which will help get the weeds under control and prevent further future infestations.

The goal is to reduce or even completely eliminate the need for weed spraying, once the area is under control we can provide a grounds maintenance program that will prevent them from returning. This applies to all areas where weeds may grow, including turf, industrial sites, shrub and flower beds, etc.

Aside from spraying weeds alone, we also provide pest control service on trees, shrubs, and other plants. Some common pests that may need to be managed by insect spraying include:

  • aphids
  • tent caterpillars
  • spider mites
  • various beetles and borers
  • sawfly
  • slugs
  • miners
  • scale

Like weed control, insect spraying will depend largely on timing as it related to the insect’s lifecycle, and where in the life cycle a problem may be noticed. It’s important to note that not all insect infestations require chemical management, but our experts can help identify when it may be time to prevent a potential larger future problem.

Weed spraying faq’s

Is weed spraying harmful to people, pets, or bees?

There seems to be a common misconception that weed spraying is harmful to people. Although certain chemicals can be somewhat harmful if contacted directly, they are generally quite safe once they spray has dried and the ‘re-entry period’ is over. There can be some harm to applicators during the mixing and spraying process if adequate PPE is not worn, but if applied safety and the re-entry guidelines are followed it’s perfectly safe for kids and pets to contact. It is important to note there have also been some known allergies to certain pesticides as well.

Weed spray generally does not harm bees either, though certain insecticides can be so the environment should be carefully inspected prior to insect spraying. Even with herbicides, care must still be taken to work around bees, safe approaches would be to ensure the right chemicals are being used, and as an extra precaution not spraying during flowering as this is when bees are more active.

When is the best time to apply weed spray or insect spray?

The best time to apply a pesticide will depend on several factors including the lifecycle of the weed or insect, the time of year, weather, etc.  The best environmental conditions to spray will align with the best growing season and conditions for weeds and insects. Additionally:

Generally, the best time to spray for weeds will be prior to flowering to prevent the spread of seed, once mid-season to keep the weeds managed, and again in the fall once the plants send energy back into their roots.

Generally, the best time to spray for insects will be early in their lifecycle in the larval stage. This is when they are most susceptible to insect sprays, and also when they cause the most damage to plant life. This will also prevent further reproduction. Depending on the severity of the infestation, usually, 1 – 3 rounds of insecticide may need to be sprayed.

How long do I need to wait to walk on the grass again after weed spraying?

This will depend on the chemical being sprayed and the type of application, but the most common pesticides sprayed in a landscape environment is usually between 12 – 24 hours.
